In this project students will participate in a shared reading activity online and then apply the reading to a math problem solving activity. The story, "When I Grow Up" is spoken in the voice of a young boy who thinks about some of the possible occupations he may choose when he grows up.

The students will read the story together and then take a survey in the classroom as to what students think they may want to be when they grow up. After taking this survey, the teacher will create a graph of their choices so that students can think up word problems using the data displayed in the graph.

Finally, students will write and illustrate their own word problems based on the occupation they have chosen. The children may use a paint program (KidPix or Paint) to create their illustrations or draw them by hand.

The students' word problems will be posted on the website for other classes to solve and enjoy.
