Our Fall Tree

Mrs. Dunn's Class

The unusually warm autumn in Michigan continued throughout the month of October. At the beginning of the observation week we needed to wear a jacket to school but we didn’t need to wear it outside by the time we went out for our afternoon recess. On Wednesday it was warm in the morning and dropped during the day. After that it was cooler. It’s been pretty dry all fall and we haven’t had too much rain. The leaves are starting to change color on most of the trees but peak color wasn’t for another week or so. The leaves on our crab apple tree are darker now and beginning to fall, which makes it easy to see the ripe, red crab apples. Below is our picture of the class under the crabapple tree in the afternoon on Tuesday. We have also included some pictures drawn with KidPix to show how we look walking to school on a Fall morning.

Our Winter Tree

Our Winter Tree

What a weird winter it’s been in Michigan! We had a cold and snowy December that included a Snow Day, when we couldn’t get to school because of all the snow. Then, beginning December 21, we had a string of about 7 weeks of above normal temperatures and lots of rain. This January was one of the warmest and rainiest on record! Now, as we get into February, we find that the “Real Winter” has reappeared with snow and cold temperatures. This week we were finally able to take our Winter Science Hike and have it seem like winter, not spring or fall. To go on the hike we needed boots, a coat, a hat or hood and mittens or gloves. Snowpants were a good thing to have but weren’t required. Our picture under the Crab Apple tree includes the expected amount of snow. We can hardly wait to see how the rest of this month and March behave. Along with our picture under the Crab Apple tree we are sending some of our snow people, dressed for the winter weather in Michigan.

Our Spring Tree

Crabapple Tree in Spring

And we thought that it was a strange winter?!?! This has been an even crazier spring. We had several weeks of sun and temperatures in the high sixties and seventies, which was as much as 25 degrees above normal. Then the temperatures took a plunge just in time for our data collection. For the last week or so we have had rain and more rain. Who knows what the rest of the spring will bring? Here is our class under the wonderful crab apple tree and, on our Student Artwork page for spring, several pictures we made with KidPix, showing us walking on a spring day.
