Our Tree in Autumn

Our Fall Tree

We have had a fun week doing observations in Astoria, New York. Our art teacher took us outside for class and we sketched some trees on our school grounds. Then, we drew ourselves wearing our favorite outfits for this season. Lastly, we took the temperature and used the Internet to find the times of the sunrises and sunsets for the week.

Our weather has been clear and cool this week with an average of 60 degrees. This is a little warm for us for this time of year. The sun has been rising at about 6:00 am and setting at about 7:00 pm. We have put away our shorts and have started wearing long pants, long sleeve shirts and a sweater at night and in the mornings!

Our Tree in Winter

Winter Tree in Astoria, NY

Winter in Astoria, New York has been surprisingly mild. We have had many days where we haven’t even had to zip up our jackets or put on gloves. During observation week, the temperature was a little lower than it has been this winter, but it still wasn’t too bad for February.

The average temperature was about 35 degrees F. The weekend after observation week turned out to be the Blizzard of ’06! Our area received over twenty inches of snow and we even had a day off from school. We enjoyed it, although the clean up will take some time. The temperature is supposed to warm back up to the 50’s by the end of the week so we should see a lot of puddles after all this melts.

Our days have definitely been shorter than they were during our last week of observations. Our sunrise usually took place at about 5:20am and the sunset was at about 6:57 pm.

Although the winter has not been too rough for us, I think that after this weekend which included the biggest snowstorm in the history of New York City, we are looking forward to spring!

Our Tree in Spring

Our Spring Tree

During our observation week, the average temperature was 71 degrees F. The sky was blue and we were enjoying the warm weather. Along with the warmer weather, we also loved the longer days. The sunrise was usually around 5:50am and the sun didn’t set until about 7:50pm. This gave us plenty of time to play outside and enjoy the spring weather. You’ll notice in our pictures, that our tree is blooming and that our clothes are lighter and more colorful. We took a class vote, and spring is definitely our favorite season!
