Map of Nepal, showing Biratnagar

Nepal is a small kingdom in south central Asia with a population of about 25 million. It is located between India and Tibet, a region of China. A mostly mountainous country, Nepal lies along the southern slopes of the Himalayas, the world's highest mountain system.

For many years Nepal was considered a land of mystery. Its rulers did not welcome foreign visitors. The Nepalese themselves lived isolated behind their high mountains, which they believed to be the home of the gods. But the establishment of diplomatic relations with other nations, efforts to modernize the country, and the growth of tourism ended the kingdom's traditional isolation.
