Our Tree in Autumn

Fall Tree

Our special tree is a Crab Apple tree in our Outdoor Classroom. On our crisp fall day when we took the picture, it had begun to lose a few leaves and the tiny, red, ripe crabapples showed through the branches. We took our Seasonal fall Science hike and saw the many changes of autumn in the woods at the back of the school property. Our path takes us along the banks of the Red Cedar River, which was unusually high from the extra rain we have gotten this fall.

Our Winter Tree

Our Winter Tree

For all of December and most of January it seemed as though a typical Michigan winter was going to be a “no show” this year. Then the temperature took a sudden plunge and it’s been below normal ever since. Snow and cold arrived just in time for our Winter Science Hike and so we managed to make lots of observations of the changes of winter. We dug out our winter jackets, snow pants and boots and have needed them ever since. When the wind chill goes below zero we’re not allowed outside for recess so we have spent 4 days inside, so far. And now that another arctic blast and winter storm are upon us, we may see many more days inside. We made snow creatures with lots of decorations and wrote “5W” poems to go with them. Now they’re posted in the hallway outside our classroom for everyone to see.  Here are some of them for our Seasonal Changes friends to enjoy, too.

Our Tree in Spring

Spring Tree

Our spring weather has been as crazy and extreme as the rest of the United States . Therefore, we took our readings for the week of April 23, rather than April 17. By then things were acting a bit more like we expect Spring in Michigan to be. Our crabapple tree came out a bit later than normal and so we took our class picture under the tree on May 4, which was a breathtakingly beautiful day with blue skies and a temperature in the high 60s. Then we took time to sit near the tree and sketch it. Some of our sketches are attached. This is the kind of day that we all wait for through a long, cold, snowy winter!
