When
the state of Arizona entered the union on February 14, 1912 it became
the 48th state. The Arizona quarter was the third quarter to be released
in 2008. The people who submitted the entries were people across the
state. One of five final designs was chosen. The final design decision
was made by Governor Janet Napolitano. On the quarter there is a picture
of the Grand Canyon and a Saguaro Cactus. The Grand Canyon covers 1.2
million acres of northwestern Arizona. The Saguaro Cactus blossom is
the state flower. The words on the quarter are on a banner that says “Grand
Canyon State.” This is the state’s nickname. The banner is
in between the cactus and the canyon to show that the cactus does not
grow in the canyon. It is found in the lowland deserts of Arizona. The
year 1912 is also on the quarter. This is when Arizona became a state. |
