The
New Mexico quarter was the 47th state quarter to be released by the
U.S. Mint. New Mexico became a state on January 6, 1912 and the
New Mexico quarter was the second one to be released
in the year 2008. The design of this quarter was chosen by Governor
Bill Richardson, after receiving 1000 ideas from New Mexico citizens.
On the state quarter you will see a Zia, which is a Pueblo sun symbol.
It is important to the state of New Mexico because the sun symbol is
believed by the Zia Pueblo tribe to represent the giver of all good.
He gave gifts in groups of four, hence the four sets of four points.
They are the four directions, the four parts of life, the four seasons,
and the four parts of the day. The circle in the middle stands for
love and life without beginning or end, which connect them all together.
This is important in the state of New Mexico because it represents
all the people, especially the Natives that live here. You will also
see the words “Land of Enchantment.” This is important
to the state of New Mexico because it shows New Mexico’s rich
history and scenic beauty. These words were also on license plates
in 1941. You will see an outline map of New Mexico. |
