The
South Dakota quarter was the 40th state quarter to be released by
the US. Mint. South Dakota became a state on November
2, 1889, and the South Dakota quarter was the fifth one to be released
in the year 2006. The design for this quarter was chosen by Governor
M. Michael Rounds from the ideas he received from the people of South
Dakota. On the state quarter of South Dakota you will see the state bird,
the Chinese ring-necked pheasant. You also will see the four presidents
carved on Mount Rushmore, which is in this state. The four presidents
are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham
Lincoln. Mount Rushmore was
carved on the mountainside by Gutzon Borglum in 1927. You will also see
two pieces of wheat on the sides. It is important in the state of South
Dakota because they grow a lot of wheat in the state.
