The Indiana quarter was the 19th state quarter to be released by the U.S. mint. Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816, and the Indiana quarter was the 4th one to be released in 2002. The design of the quarter was chosen by Judy O’ Bannon who requested designs from Indiana citizens. The Indiana Quarter Design Committee chose 17 designs for people to vote on for their favorite designs. Governor O’ Bannon made the final choice. On the state quarter of Indiana you will see a picture of a racecar on the quarter. It is important in the state of Indiana because it was the racecar Ray Harroun used in the Indy 500 when he broke the speed record. The Indy 500 is a car race that takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana. You will also see the words “Crossroads of America,” which is the motto for Indiana. It is important in the state of Indiana because it is near the center of the U.S. |
