The
Michigan quarter was the 26th state quarter to be released by the U.S.
Mint. Michigan became a state on January 26, 1837, and the Michigan
quarter was the first one to be released in the year 2004. The design
of this quarter was chosen by Governor Jennifer Granholm. On the state
quarter of Michigan you will see the map of Michigan and all five of
the Great Lakes. The words on the quarter say “Great Lakes State.” This
is important in the state of Michigan because four of the five Great
Lakes border the state, and the state’s nicknames are the Water
Wonderland and the Great Lakes State. The names of the lakes are Lake
Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. They
contain the largest body of fresh water in the world.
