The
Missouri quarter was the 16th state quarter to be released by the U.S
Mint. Missouri became a state on August 10, 1821 and the Missouri quarter
was the 4th one to be released in the year 2003. Governor Bob Holden
chose the design of the Missouri quarter. On the state quarter of Missouri
you will see the Missouri River. It is important in the state of Missouri
because it was named by the Native American tribe called the Missouri
who once lived along the Missouri River. That is how the Missouri River
got its name. You can also see a picture of Merriwether Lewis and William
Clark rowing a boat on the Missouri River. In 1804 President Thomas
Jefferson wanted to learn more about the United States, so he sent
Lewis and Clark to explore the Mississippi River and look for other
rivers to connect to the Pacific Ocean. Their group of explorers were
called the Corps of Discovery, and these words also appear on the Missouri
quarter. You will also see the Gateway Arch. It is important to the
state of Missouri because it is the biggest monument in the United
States. It was built to remind people that this region was once known
as the gateway to the west. |
